The Pasta Boutique: Gourmet Pasta from a Kopitiam

Coffee shops have recently seen a gradual increase of western food stalls serving up restaurant quality fare, yet the westerns around my house somehow continues to serve shit food. Bedokians count your blessings, because now you have another location to add to your plethora of food options.

Introducing The Pasta Boutique, who besides specialising in plates of homemade pasta that Jamie Oliver would be proud of, also dishes out other mains like steaks and chicken chops for the meat lovers. And as expected from a kopitiam stall, everything is reasonably priced and will not put a hole in your pocket.

Chili Crab Pasta $10.50
One of their much raved about signatures is the chili crab pasta, topped with a generous pile of genuine crab meat (not the crappy ntuc kind) and your choice of pasta (spaghetti, linguine or fettuccine). Garnished with thinly sliced lime leaves, it resembles more of tom yum noodles than the eggy, thick chili crab sauce we all know and love, but still good nonetheless.

Carbonara $8.50
The carbonara reminded me of my love life, largely underwhelming and disappointing. It could have used more smokey flavour and yolky texture from the bacon and eggs, but to be fair, this was not one of the chef's recommendations. Also, the messily grated cheese all over the plate is probably intended.

Creamy Bacon & Mushroom $9.50
This dish lived up to its name indeed. Creamy, bacony and littered with mushrooms. A decent plate of cream pasta, but nothing out of the ordinary.

Spicy Prawn Pasta $10.50
Hands down the best pasta dish among those that we tried. The sauce was a delicate balance of white wine, cream and grated cheese with the sweet cherry tomatoes adding a nice zesty edge. I really enjoyed the beautiful fusion of the sauce coating the al dente noodles and almost licked my plate clean. They also gave me 7 prawns, which is probably because of my dashing looks.

Chicken Chop with Herbs and Spices $8.80
Ironic that the highlight of the night was the chicken chop and not any of the pastas. The skin was crisply grilled and well seasoned with herbs, while retaining the tenderness of the meat. It was accompanied by ratatouille, a thick mushroom gravy and one of the better, buttery mashed potatoes we have had in a while. We ordered this to share and it was quickly polished off, easily stealing the limelight. I recommend giving Pasta Boutique a visit, for their affordably priced pastas and that chicken chop that i will have wet dreams about.
