Thai Gold Food: Golden Standard Thai Food at Sunshine Plaza

What's the first thing that comes to mind with regards to the word "Thai"? Yep that's right.. THAI DISCO~~ wooo yo ah yo, lim ar lim with siam bu *hangs flower*. NO. It's Thai food. No siam diu review here. Not yet.

A corner away from the Big Cheese where i reviewed earlier, is Thai Gold Food, a small kitchen serving up authentic Thai cuisine at affordable prices. The aroma of tom yum, lemongrass and fish sauce flirting with your nose, combined with the Thai staff taking your order in basic english will make you feel as though you magically transported to Bangkok upon walking through the glass doors.

Pad Thai $6
Let's begin with the unofficial national dish that foreigners love. I liked that their pad thai had no sour element to it before the lime was squeezed, because it fucking isn't supposed to be sour like how many eateries in Singapore make it. I also enjoyed the mild sweetness from the tamarind base although I would have preferred the noodles to be not as wet (unlike my girls).

Pineapple Fried Rice with Chicken $6
The fragrance of the fried rice raised our eyebrows as soon as it was served (not because there were siam bus around). The highest praise i can offer is that it is on par with the pineapple rice i've had in Bangkok. The only factor stopping it from being a great plate of fried rice was expecting chicken chunks, but ending up with chicken floss instead.

Tom Yum Fried Rice with Seafood $6
Decent plate of fried rice packed full of tom yum flavours, but nothing spectacular otherwise. The amount of seafood was really stingy as well. It is so mediocre that i'm having a hard time describing it. The plate design not bad.

Fried Kway Teow with Chicken $5
The best dish of the night is the Thai version of char kway teow. Infused with a heavenly wok hei and so smooth when it slides into the mouth, it was perfect with the bits of egg and sweetness from the vegetables. Again, the amount of chicken was not the most generous, but i would be more than willing to pay $5 for this any day of the week.

Grilled Pork Collar $10
Having our confidence raised by the solid quality of the carb dishes, we ordered a plate of grilled pork collar to share. Although the meat was seasoned nicely, the texture was tough and rubbery when it should have been tender and juicy. A far cry from the pork collar we had in Thailand, we all agreed that this was not worth the 10 bucks.
5 / 10

All in all, a good place for affordable and tasty Thai food, but you will not be able to get your protein fix here from the rice and noodle dishes alone. The pork felt like us having a shiok Thai massage with the masseur screwing up the final satisfying crack at the end. Thai Gold Food almost became our new favourite spot for Thai food, but alas it was not to be. 差一点~~
