Heap Seng Leong: A Blast From The Past

Can't afford to chill at Starbucks because you are earning less than a 1 figure salary like me, but still want to be a hipster by lepaking somewhere chic with coffee for hours? Presenting to you: Heap Seng Leong, a haven for people pining for the good ol' days when policemen still wore shorts.

Yes, and now you are the leading male of the show, you rugged, sexy beast. The aroma of freshly roasted coffee and burning toast drifts in the air, while a diverse customer base made up of seasoned locals, tourists, hipsters and 2 unfathomably handsome hunks fill up the seats.

Kopi Gu You (Coffee with Butter) $1.10
Not commonly ordered in other coffee shops for obvious health reasons, coffee dunked with a slab of butter is a trademark here. The butter dissipates into the aromatic coffee, making it thicker and smoother than your average cup.

Kaya Toast $1.20
Another traditional breakfast favourite is toast spread with coconut jam and butter. The kaya was creamy and perfectly sweet, while the butter provided a slight, salty contrast, all enveloped by fluffy white bread with slightly crusty edges.

Soft Boiled Eggs $1
This breakfast would not be complete without eggs boiled to perfection. Still runny but lacking any raw edge, the eggs also doubles as a lube if you prefer your toast moist. They even make the extra effort to crack the eggs so you don't have to get your hands dirty. 加分加分!

This is the perfect place to linger over a cup of coffee, provided you don't melt from the Singapore heat like that butter in the kopi. They could have given Ya Kun a run for their money by modernising, but instead stayed true to their roots and loyal customers by not changing a thing (except the prices) and retaining their charm. One day, i too will grow old and lepak with my cronies at the nearest kopitiam before we die, one by one, from having too much butter clog up our arteries.

History Fact! : Heap Seng Leong has been around since the 1950s, and hopefully will be preserved for many years to come.
