Samjin Amook: Korea's Famous Deep Fried Fishcakes Are In Town

Don't you have days where you wake up just dying to have fishcakes? Me neither. But sometimes random stuff happens and when it does, Samjin Amook will have that covered. Boasting 40 different types of fishcakes combined with all sorts of ingredients like cheese, rice cakes and hotdogs, this ain't your ordinary yong tau foo.

Don't worry about cold, limp amooks, because they are immediately displayed out fresh from the kitchen and are constantly being replenished. If the item you desire is currently out of stock, just hang around and pretend to think about the philosophy of life until the next batch arrives. That being said, the downside to the bakery style concept was the shop getting pretty packed from customers waiting for newly fried fishcakes to be served. For the losers who can't take spicy food, avoid the red labels because you are not deserving of them.

Yellow Shrimp Paprika $2

The first ever bite of amook in my life and i have never tasted a more average piece of fishcake.. I guess i was expecting a chunkier texture or more flavour from the paprika but it just turned out to be a fishcake on a stick which was not very exciting.

Sweet Potato Croquette $2.30

This i liked, though. The crispy batter gave it a nice outer crunch, while the insides were stuffed with gooey sweet potato filling which provided nice balance to the fishcake. The cheese croquette sounds like it would have been even better but it was sold out and we did not want to hang around pretending to think about life.

Rice Cake Roll $2

Yes, it is a tiny fishcake stuffed with a rice cake inside and yes, it tastes exactly like what it sounds.

Ham Roll Hot Dog $3.50

Another chunk of fishcake on a stick, just with a ntuc hotdog stuffed inside this time. Yes, it was an alright tasting snack and the crispy batter was an improvement, but it is in no way delicious and definitely not worth the $3.50 price tag.

Crabmeat Flower $2.80

It is apparent now that most of their fishcakes taste the same except for the fillings, and that is true for this item as well. An intriguing piece of crabmeat that was pretty stringy surrounded by more boring fishcake.

Laver Roll $2

This was the only unique tasting fishcake though not in a good way. The sesame leaf was really overpowering and made it taste like a really pungent veggie ngoh hiang.

I can't say i am Samjin Amook's biggest fan as fishcakes are not an exciting food item for me. Maybe all the hype surrounding the shop's opening made it even more underwhelming, but i will stick to Old Chang Kee for my finger food fix. One positive did come out from all those fishcakes though..
