Hua Kee Hougang Famous Wanton Mee: Not Really in Hougang

It's December! And that means Christmas is coming, which makes me happy. Know what else makes me happy? Wanton mee. And boobs. I'm a simple man... The next few posts will be celebrating food from Old Airport Food Centre, which is arguably the best hawker centre in Singapore. We begin with Hua Kee Hougang Famous Wanton Mee, which is found on the first row of stalls, facing the main road.

Wanton Mee $4
First impressions will leave you fearing for your throat, with chunks of pork lard, deep fried wantons and a blob of fiery looking chili paste. The char siew and dumplings were also generously littered over the bowl, ensuring that no mouthful of noodles will go unaccompanied by a sidekick of meat or wanton.

Had a hard time mixing the contents of the bowl around due to the sheer amount of ingredients, but thankfully i have a masters degree in wanton mee tossing. The noodles were springy and q by nature, but the real star of the show is the chili paste, which carried a pleasant, roasted aroma with a mild level of spiciness. Char siew was not as fatty or charred as i would have liked, while the wantons, both boiled and fried were nothing to write home about. Overall, a decent bowl of wanton noodles carried across the finishing line by the chili, but there are definitely better ones around the island.
