Iskina Cebu: Lechon That Makes You Go Wew

If you have never tried lechon before, you're missing out. Lechon is a roasted pork dish which originated from Spain but is now immensely popular in the Philippines. The highlight of this dish is undoubtedly the superb crispy crackling that crunches more satisfyingly than any keropok you've ever had.

A new perk has been added to living in the east (as if it wasn't already the superior part of SG). Iskina Cebu has opened in Tampines, striving to bring the wonderful taste of lechon to our tastebuds without us having to take a plane. Manned and prepared in store by true blue Filipinos, rest assured that what you are getting is the real deal.

BellyChon Meal $10
Besides the ala carte option, there are only two meals on their menu: spicy or non spicy. I ordered the latter to sample the original flavours and received what resembled a plate of sio bak rice (which seemed rather lonely and could use some cucumbers, even if it's only for decoration purposes) served with a vinegary dark soy sauce.

Oh. My. God was the skin crunchy. I'm talking mind blowing, feel-your-teeth-shatter crunch every time your jaw closes. The pork belly meat itself was as expected: fatty, salty, and downright sinful. Although not melt in your mouth tender, it encouraged additional bites which released more flavors with every chew. But even as a full time carnivore, i still think this dish needed some veggies to help it to be less sickening. It has to be noted that the skin got 'nua' and chewy towards the end of the meal (probably because i took so long taking photos and combating it with my teeth). When it reaches that stage, you just have to admit defeat and let that meat go... Go on, my dear lechon...

Lechon Fact! : In the Philippines, lechon is usually served with a liver sauce, which may sound yucks to some, but very yumz for me.
